Prefabricated module for reliable installation
With GM RAILING® DOUBLE SMART, the glass and U-profile form a prefabricated unit that is installed directly into the prepared substructure. This reduces the number of individual components required on site, simplifies installation and increases installation reliability. Even on larger projects, the modular design supports precise and efficient project execution.
For larger construction projects with repetitive balcony configurations, the modular design also facilitates precise planning and structured on-site installation.
Dual load transfer for high stability
The glass module and U-profile interlock on both sides and transfer applied loads through both sides of the profile into the supporting structure. This ensures high stability while maintaining a compact profile appearance.
Minimal aluminium, clear architectural expression
Railings and parapets have a significant influence on the appearance of a façade. Wide profiles and bulky constructions can visually dominate the architecture. GM RAILING® DOUBLE SMART therefore follows a deliberately minimalist design approach.
The compact U-profile minimises the visible proportion of aluminium and places the glass surface at the forefront. The transparent glazing creates a sense of openness, allows light to reach the areas behind it and supports a light, contemporary façade design.
Additional options for existing parapets
GM RAILING® DOUBLE SMART also offers flexible solutions for refurbishment and modernisation projects. Existing masonry or concrete parapets can be supplemented with a transparent glass extension to achieve the required height.
For low balcony parapets in particular, this provides a safe solution without having to completely replace the existing construction. The original parapet remains part of the building architecture and is complemented by a transparent glass element.
This makes GM RAILING® DOUBLE SMART particularly suitable for residential developments, property companies, property managers and architecturally demanding refurbishment projects.
Connections and moisture protection taken into account
A functional railing system involves more than just the glass. The connections to the substructure, waterproofing and façade are equally important.
With GM RAILING® DOUBLE SMART, these interfaces form an integral part of the system concept. Thanks to full-surface bonding, the bonded area is protected against water ingress. Waterproofing layers, membranes and sheet-metal components can be incorporated into the design in a controlled manner.
External façade cladding can also be integrated into the system, including:
- sheet-metal façade cladding
- HPL panels
- other panel-type cladding materials
Depending on the construction, the façade cladding is installed first, followed by the prefabricated glass module. This allows the individual trades to be coordinated efficiently and ensures clean, well-defined connections.
Laminated safety glass for durable applications
The system uses laminated safety glass with PVB or SGP interlayers. The glass configuration, dimensions, fixing method and substructure are adapted to the specific installation conditions of each project.
FAQs
What was GM RAILING® DOUBLE SMART developed for?
The glass railing system was specifically developed to safely increase the height of low masonry and concrete parapets in existing buildings and new builds. The existing parapet is generally retained and supplemented with a transparent glass extension.
What types of buildings is the system suitable for?
GM RAILING® DOUBLE SMART is particularly suitable for existing residential buildings, apartment buildings and larger residential developments, as well as new builds. The system can be used for individual balconies as well as for extensive refurbishment and modernisation projects.
How is the parapet extension installed?
The glass and U-profile are prepared as a prefabricated unit. This module is then installed into the designated substructure on site. The high degree of prefabrication enables a clear and efficiently planned installation process.
What makes the system particularly stable?
The U-profile and glass module interlock on both sides. As a result, any loads that occur are transferred through both sides of the profile into the supporting structure.
Can façade cladding be integrated?
Yes. Sheet-metal façade cladding, HPL panels and other cladding materials can be taken into account during the planning stage. Depending on the construction, the glass module can also be installed after the façade cladding has been fitted.
How is the connection protected against moisture?
The full-surface bonding prevents water from penetrating the bonded area. In addition, waterproofing layers, membranes and sheet-metal components can be specifically integrated into the connection detail.
